The UN Conferences on « Cities and other Human Settlements » take place every 20 years (Vancouver 1976, Istanbul 1996, Quito 2016). They constitute important landmarks, identifying urban challenges, opportunities, problems, and proposing principles and solutions applicable all over the world. They adopt Urban Agendas reflecting a universal consensus. In spite of the enormous growth of the world urban population in the last 40 years, strategies to ensure sustainable urbanization are characterized by an amazing continuity. The attached article, published in “Cities Today”, analyses the evolution of ideas and policy priorities since the Vancouver Conference.
